They say he's a hero — the gunslinger who walked into the enemy's palace and walked back out, the last Protector who never breaks. The truth is uglier. Jack Barnes is one bad night from collapse, dragging a handful of doomed, superpowered kids across a wasteland crawling with mutants, walking corpses, and the City Men who want the children's gifts for themselves.

The Protectors are losing. The Founding Fathers are dead. The only hope left is a relic out of a bedtime story: the Philosopher's Stone, said to hold the power of the Ultimate Sorcerer himself.

To reach it, Jack must cross haunted mountains, a desert no man has survived, and the temptation that has corrupted every soul who ever touched that kind of power.
